WILLOW: VILLAINtree And ANGELtree

The Real Napoleon Willow: Click Here

In Tasmania "willow" has a  special meaning.
  • “Willows” means any species in the genus Salix, EXCLUDING Salix. babylonica L., Salix. x calodendron and Salix x reichardtiand, includes the whole plant or plant parts. It does not include products such as baskets, cricket bats, timber, medicinal preparations or other items that contain extracts of these plants or other dead Salix materials".
Salix. babylonica 'Napolion's Willow or Weeping Willow' may have escaped the legislator's wrath because of its cultural cargo and we'll probably never know. Nonetheless, it is an interesting speculation and it is somewhat puzzling as to why it and two other willows did.
People who are uncertain about whether certain products (e.g. dried materials) contain plant parts capable of regenerating should contact a Regional Weed Management Officer.

Nematus oligospilus, a sawfly that feeds exclusively on willows, was discovered in Auckland in February 1997. Adults disperse rapidly by flight, and by the autumn of 1997 the species was had been reported in Rotorua. By April 1998 larvae were widespread in the Bay of Plenty and Poverty Bay, where large numbers were found to be damaging several different willow types. The larvae are external leaf-feeders, with a demonstrated ability in other countries to defoliate and even kill willow trees. This new pest poses a threat to soil stabilisation and river bank erosion control programmes, which rely on relatively few species and cultivars of willow, most of which have been bred in New Zealand over the past 30 years.
