Huon Pine Wickery Screen

A screen of woven Huon pine veneer strips in a blackwood frame, 1480 x 930 mm

The history:
  • 1 July 1986: Bought a $20 Huon pine plank from a Burnie timber merchant, took it to Britton Bros in Smithton for veneer slicing, cost $50.
  • 14-26 July 1986: Cut the veneer sheets into long, uniform strips with a sharp knife, wove the screen on a tabletop jig.
  • 15-21 August 1986: Cut and made the frame from blackwood strips, mounted the screen and stained the frame.
From late 1986 to 31 March 1987 the screen was offered for sale at Handmark Gallery in Salamanca Place, Hobart. When it didn't sell there, I took it back and put it first in Gallery Z in Zeehan (1-8 April 1987), then in Zeehan's Rock Shop (9 April 1987).

I retrieved the still-unsold screen some years later and it's been in my home ever since.
