Wickery Cache #40/33/7250-1:2017

Well the narratives embedded in this lot are more than interesting. There is some storytelling to be unpicked and somewhat reassuringly the cache here might well be the starting point for an exploration that's headed somewhere other than a dead end.

  1. Looking at these baskets the concept of wabi-sabi springs to mind. Currently, design practice tends to down play this kind of thing. However, if we are looking to be sustainable we really do need challenge built in obsolesce that comes with plastics even if it need not be that way. The Swedes have opened a market for repaired goods and they are giving tax breaks to people who repair things instead of buying new. This is a 21st C design issue – See https://inhabitat.com/sweden-opens-an-entire-mall-full-of-reclaimed-goods/

  2. In Zen there are seven aesthetic principles for achieving Wabi-Sabi: Fukinsei: asymmetry, irregularity; Kanso: simplicity; Koko: basic, weathered; Shizen: without pretense, natural; Yugen: subtly profound grace, not obvious; Datsuzoku: unbounded by convention, free; Seijaku: tranquility.
